Recording a software demo with Wink
Introduction
Wink is an open-source software
available for Windows and Linux. Although having less features than heavier
solutions like Camtasia, it may be good enough for your need. You can record
a presentation, (re)move sections and frames, add sound and/or "callouts"
(text within frames), etc. The output can be saved as either Macromedia Flash, Standalone EXE, PDF, PostScript, HTML
or standard image formats.
Tips
- If the output will be shown within a web browser, switch to a lower
resolution (eg. 800x600) before recording a sequence, so as to leave room
for the browser's menu (and possibly icon bar) which takes screen real estate
out of the Flash section. You might want to record two versions of the presentation
(800x600 and 1024x768) and include some JavaScript to direct the user automatically
to the format that best fits his screen resolution
- Instead of the standard, green GoTo arrow, you can use a GIF transparent
button, so the screen looks more natural
